fishing cabin

7 years ago Cortney stayed at his friends lake house on Scofield Reservoir...his friend told him that cabins up there were super cheap but you had to get on a waiting list to buy one and it took a long time to get to the top of the list.  At the time Cortney knew of course he wanted on that list.  He told me about it afterwards and I freaked out saying we were not buying a fishing cabin....he told me I didn't need to worry about it...we wouldn't be called for years.

The last week in May we got the call.  The call saying a cabin was available and we were 3rd on the list.  Cortney knew his friends were on the list in front of him so he called them and they weren't in a position to buy one.  So he drove up that day to take a look at it.  The last owners have owned it for 4 years but they never really went up and are super old and haven't taken care of it at all....now they are sick and were wanting to sell.  When Cortney got up there the people on the list under us were ready cash in hand to buy it...so the pressure was on for us...if we wanted it we had to decide fast.  I knew the morning we got the call that Cortney would do whatever it took to get it.  When he gets his mind set on something it happens...that is just the way he is.  He does what ever it takes.  We went back and forth for about a week, mostly him trying to convince me it was the right thing to do.  I wasn't sure but I decided to go for it.

My main reasons for doing it were...1) I love the idea of getting away from the world as a family...no friends, no phones (literally there is absolutely NO signal up there...it's so weird.), no internet, no tv...the first time we were up there my kids didn't know what to do. 2) I want my kids to learn how to be in the wilderness...they are such city kids, I can't wait for them to learn about riding four wheelers, swimming in lakes, playing outside, looking at the stars, exploring, cutting down trees...that kind of stuff. 3) Who doesn't dream of a vacation home???...Cortney calls it the fishing cabin, I call it the reading cabin.  It will be so fun to have a place we can escape to whenever we want.

The cabin is located in a little fishing camp on the west side of Scofield Reservoir, it takes about an hour and 20 minutes to get there from our house.

The town of Scofield had 28 people at the time of the last census, there is a tiny gas station and that is about it.

This in the red circle is the fishing camp.  There are 61 "dwellings", in the camp.

Here in the red circle is our tiny cabin and the land around.  We have a great lot.  Lots of beautiful aspens.

The closest grocery store really is in Spanish Fork, so you have to be really prepared.

Here is a walk through video of the "cabin" the first day Cortney went up to look at it.
It needs a crazy ton of work.  One side is a travel trailer/camper from the 70's, the camper has a kitchen a bathroom and a tiny bedroom...and then built on to that is a 6' x 15' entry room, with another bathroom, and then a 12'x13' living room. We have painted almost everything and replaced the flooring in most of it.  Also when we got it we found that they hadn't winterized the pipes for 4 years so we had a bunch of broken pipes.  Cortney was up there maybe 4 or 5 times before he got that all fixed.  It was a pain.

Here is a video of the community...don't feel pressure to watch these...I just know people are curious.

There is so much work to do...in all parts.  The outside needs to be maybe painted or re-sided...and there are some bird nests.
Our brother Griffin made this Elk Boice sign for us like 10 years ago.  It is so exciting to have a place to hang it.

The kitchen during the painting.  Cali watched our kids overnight while Cortney and I worked on painting all of the trailer side.
It was dark dark wood before.

Here is the new floor we put in the entry way and it will be in the living room too soon.

WE got this brand new futon off of ksl, it is from ikea and hadn't even been used....its covered by a sheet right now because we had slept on it.

The new flooring in the trailer side.

We got a full over full bunk bed for the back room. It BARELY fits.  But it makes the room real cozy.

This is the carpet that was in there before.

The cabin has a couple of nice sheds.  You can see here how half is a trailer.
There are tons of lilac bushes around too.

Here is our fire pit...it is across the little road...it is up from other cabins.

oh boy I have other pictures but they are being to hard to load.  Oh well.

How cool!
I would love a vacation place....an hour and 20
Is awesome, far enough that you are away but easy to get to.
